Barbell Buying Guide: What Makes a Good Powerlifting Bar
What to look for in a powerlifting barbell. Shaft diameter, knurling, whip, tensile strength, and which bars are worth buying.
A good powerlifting barbell has a 29mm shaft, aggressive knurling, center knurl marks, minimal whip, and enough tensile strength to hold 700+ pounds without developing permanent bend. That description narrows the field considerably — and that's the point. You don't need a hundred options. You need one bar that handles squat, bench, and deadlift without compromise.
Here's how to evaluate a barbell like someone who's going to put serious weight on it.
SHAFT DIAMETER
Powerlifting bars use a 29mm shaft diameter. This is not arbitrary — it's the IPF competition standard and the diameter that balances grip security with load capacity.
Olympic weightlifting bars are 28mm for men and 25mm for women, designed for faster spin and more flex. These are not ideal for powerlifting — the thinner shaft whips under heavy squats and the faster-spinning sleeves are unnecessary.
General-purpose bars often split the difference at 28.5mm. They're acceptable if you're on a strict budget, but a true 29mm power bar is the correct tool for powerlifting.
Women's power bars exist at 25mm, though they're less common. Most women in powerlifting train and compete with standard 29mm bars.
KNURLING
Knurling is the crosshatch pattern etched into the shaft. It creates grip. The depth and aggressiveness of the knurling varies dramatically between bars, and this is the single biggest differentiator in how a bar feels in your hands.
Passive knurling — smooth, shallow texture. Found on cheap bars and some Olympic bars. Inadequate for heavy deadlifts. Your hands slip before your back fatigues.
Moderate knurling — noticeable bite without being painful. The sweet spot for most training. Bars from Rep Fitness and mid-range Rogue options land here.
Aggressive knurling — deep, sharp texture that grips skin firmly. Found on premium power bars like the Texas Power Bar and Rogue Ohio Power Bar. Excellent for deadlifts, potentially uncomfortable for high-rep sets. Calluses are part of the deal.
Volcano knurling — a specific pattern where the peaks of each knurl point are slightly flattened. This creates grip through friction rather than skin penetration. Less painful, still effective. The Rogue Ohio Power Bar uses this.
Center knurling: a strip of knurling in the middle of the shaft, between the grip areas. This keeps the bar from sliding down your back during squats. Every powerlifting bar should have center knurling. If a bar doesn't have it, it's not a power bar.
TENSILE STRENGTH AND WHIP
Tensile strength measures how much force the steel can withstand before breaking, measured in PSI (pounds per square inch).
- Under 150K PSI: budget bars. Prone to bending under moderate load.
- 150K-180K PSI: mid-range. Adequate for most lifters but may develop slight bend over years of heavy use.
- 190K+ PSI: high-end power bars. Extremely resistant to permanent bend. This is the standard for serious powerlifting bars.
Whip refers to how much the bar flexes under load. Olympic bars are designed to whip — the flex helps with cleans and snatches. Power bars are designed to be stiff. You don't want the bar bouncing on your back during a squat or flexing mid-pull on a deadlift.
A stiff bar with 190K+ PSI tensile strength and a 29mm shaft has minimal whip. That's what you want for powerlifting.
SLEEVES AND ROTATION
The sleeves are the ends of the bar where plates load. They rotate on bushings or bearings to allow the plates to spin independently from the shaft.
Bushings — bronze or composite rings between the sleeve and shaft. Slower, smoother rotation. Standard on power bars. Adequate for powerlifting because you don't need fast spin.
Bearings — precision needle bearings that allow very fast, free rotation. Standard on Olympic bars. Unnecessary for powerlifting and more expensive.
For a power bar, bushing construction is correct. The sleeves should rotate, but they don't need to spin freely. If you're doing cleans as an accessory movement, bushings still work fine.
Sleeve construction also affects durability. Snap ring construction (a retaining ring holds the sleeve on) is standard and serviceable. Some premium bars use different retention methods. What matters is that the sleeves don't wobble laterally and don't come loose over time.
BAR COATINGS
The shaft coating affects corrosion resistance, grip feel, and maintenance requirements.
Bare steel — no coating. Best grip feel, most responsive knurling. Requires regular maintenance (wiping down after use, occasional oiling) to prevent rust. Best for low-humidity environments or dedicated lifters who maintain their equipment.
Black oxide — a mild surface treatment that provides slight corrosion resistance while preserving the feel of bare steel. The most popular finish for power bars. Eventually wears off the knurl peaks, exposing bare steel underneath. That's fine — it means you're using the bar.
Zinc — more corrosion-resistant than black oxide. Slightly smoother feel. Good for humid environments where rust is a concern.
Cerakote — a ceramic coating applied in various colors. Excellent corrosion resistance, smooth feel. Some lifters find it too slick on the knurling, though quality Cerakote applications maintain grip well. More expensive.
Chrome — very durable, very smooth. The smoothness can reduce knurl effectiveness. Less common on dedicated power bars.
Stainless steel — the premium option. No coating needed because the steel itself resists corrosion. Best of all worlds: bare steel feel with no maintenance. Also the most expensive shaft material, adding $100-200 to the bar price.
For most home gym powerlifters, black oxide or bare steel is the right choice. If you live somewhere humid, zinc or stainless steel is worth the premium.
RECOMMENDED BARBELLS
Budget ($100-200):
CAP OB-86B — a basic power bar that handles moderate loads. Not aggressive knurling, not the stiffest bar, but functional. A reasonable starter bar.
Rep Sabre Power Bar — better knurling and stiffer shaft than most bars at this price point. Solid entry-level option.
Mid-Range ($200-350):
Rep Deep Knurl Power Bar — aggressive knurling, 190K PSI, black oxide finish. Punches well above its price. One of the best values in the barbell market.
Titan Fitness Power Bar — competitively priced, decent knurling, adequate tensile strength. Good option if budget is tight.
Premium ($250-400):
Rogue Ohio Power Bar — arguably the most popular power bar in the world. 205K PSI, volcano knurling, available in bare steel, black zinc, or stainless. The benchmark other bars are measured against.
Texas Power Bar (Buddy Capps) — the original aggressive power bar. Legendary knurling that borders on painful for some lifters. 186K PSI. A classic that's been a competition staple for decades.
Kabuki New Generation Power Bar — 230K+ PSI, precision manufacturing, aggressive knurling. Premium price for premium performance.
Competition ($400+):
Eleiko IPF Competition Powerlifting Bar — the bar used at IPF World Championships. Precision-calibrated weight, perfect knurling. Unnecessary for home use but the objective standard for competition.
HOW TO TEST A BARBELL
If you can handle the bar in person:
- Roll it on a flat surface — it should roll straight without wobbling
- Check sleeve spin — they should rotate smoothly without grinding
- Run your hand over the knurling — it should grip without being sharp enough to cut
- Check for center knurl — it should be present and have similar depth to the outer knurling
- Flex the bar — grab the center and push down. A good power bar has minimal deflection
If you're buying online (as most people do), rely on tensile strength ratings, shaft diameter specs, and reviews from other powerlifters. Return policies matter — if the bar arrives bent, you need to be able to send it back.
MAINTENANCE
Wipe down the shaft with a dry rag after each session. Sweat plus steel equals rust.
Once a month (or as needed in humid environments), scrub the knurling with a nylon brush to remove chalk and skin buildup, then apply a light coat of 3-in-1 oil to the shaft.
Oil the sleeve-shaft junction periodically — a few drops where the sleeve meets the shaft keeps rotation smooth.
Store the bar horizontally in J-cups or on a wall-mounted bar holder. Standing a bar vertically in a corner can eventually bend the shaft.
A well-maintained barbell lasts decades. The bar your father used still works — it just needs oil and respect.
