Power Rack Buyer Guide

How to choose a power rack for your home gym. Steel gauge, hole spacing, attachments, and which racks are worth the money.

A power rack is four steel uprights with adjustable safety bars and J-cups. It holds the barbell for squats, catches the bar when you fail, and supports bench press. It is the most important piece of equipment in a home gym — not because it's the most used, but because it's the one that keeps you safe when you train alone.

Buy a rack with adequate steel, proper hole spacing, and room for attachments. Here's how to evaluate what's on the market.

POWER RACK VS SQUAT STAND VS HALF RACK

Power rack (full cage) — four uprights connected by crossmembers, with adjustable safety bars inside the cage. The safest option. If you fail a squat, the safeties catch the bar. If you fail a bench, the safeties catch the bar. This is what you want if you train without a spotter.

Half rack — two front uprights and two rear uprights connected by a horizontal frame, open in the front. Safeties are available but less enclosed than a full cage. Takes up slightly less depth. Fine for squats, less ideal for bench press safety.

Squat stands — two independent uprights with J-cups. No safeties unless you buy separate stands. Cheapest option, smallest footprint, but offers the least protection. Acceptable if you have a spotter or use bumper plates on a platform.

For a home gym where you train alone: full power rack, no exceptions.

THE SPECS THAT MATTER

Steel Gauge and Upright Size

Budget racks use 2x2 inch uprights with 14-gauge steel. They work for lifters handling under 400-500 pounds and offer acceptable stability.

Mid-range racks use 2x3 inch or 3x3 inch uprights with 11-gauge steel. These are noticeably more rigid, handle heavier loads without flexing, and accept a wider range of attachments. This is the sweet spot for most home gym powerlifters.

High-end racks use 3x3 inch uprights with 11-gauge or 7-gauge steel. They're built for commercial use and will outlast every lifter who touches them. Overkill for most home gyms, but they exist if you want the best.

Hole Spacing

This is one of the most overlooked specifications and one of the most important.

Standard spacing: holes every 2 inches throughout the rack. Acceptable for squats but imprecise for bench press. A 2-inch difference in J-cup or safety height is significant when you're dialing in your bench setup.

Westside hole spacing: holes every 1 inch in the bench zone (roughly the middle third of the upright), 2-inch spacing elsewhere. This gives you precise J-cup and safety placement for bench press while keeping manufacturing costs reasonable.

Look for Westside spacing on any rack you're considering. The difference between a 1-inch and 2-inch height adjustment on bench safeties can mean the difference between a safety that catches a failed rep at chest level and one that pins you.

Weight Capacity

Manufacturers list weight capacities that are often theoretical maximums under ideal conditions. Take them with skepticism.

For practical purposes:

  • 700-pound rated capacity handles most home gym lifters
  • 1,000-pound rated capacity handles anyone short of an elite equipped lifter
  • 1,500+ pound capacity is commercial-grade and handles literally anything

The failure point isn't usually the uprights — it's the J-cups or the safety bars. Check that those components are rated adequately too.

Depth and Width

Inside depth (front to back): needs to be deep enough to squat without hitting the rear uprights on your walkout. 24 inches minimum, 30 inches is comfortable.

Inside width: needs to accommodate a standard barbell between the uprights. 42-44 inches is standard and works with all standard barbells.

Outside dimensions matter for your space. Measure your garage or room before ordering. Account for plate loading clearance on both sides of the bar — you need about 18 inches of clearance per side beyond the uprights.

Ceiling Height

Standard racks are about 80-90 inches tall. If your ceiling is under 8 feet, look for short racks (72 inches) or racks with removable pull-up bars.

If you want to do overhead press inside the rack — which is convenient and safe — you need ceiling height equal to the rack height plus the length of your arms plus the width of your plates. For most people, that's about 9 feet minimum.

ATTACHMENTS AND COMPATIBILITY

The most useful rack attachments:

Pull-up bar — included with most racks. Multi-grip versions are nice but not essential.

Dip attachment — J-hook mounted or pin-mounted handles that let you do dips on the rack. $40-100.

Landmine attachment — a pivot point for barbell landmine exercises. $20-40.

Band pegs — pins at the base of the rack for attaching resistance bands. Essential if you do accommodating resistance work. $15-30.

Plate storage — pegs on the rear uprights that hold your plates. Keeps the floor clear and weights accessible. Often included or $30-50 as an add-on.

Lat pulldown / low row attachment — a pulley system that mounts on top of and behind the rack. The biggest upgrade for back training. $150-400 depending on quality.

Before buying a rack, check what attachments are available for it. Proprietary hole patterns and upright sizes limit what you can add later. Racks with 5/8-inch holes on standard spacing (2x3 or 3x3 uprights) have the widest aftermarket accessory compatibility.

RECOMMENDED RACKS BY BUDGET

Under $400: Titan T-2

2x2 inch uprights, 14-gauge steel, 700-pound capacity. Gets the job done for lifters handling moderate weight. Limited attachment options due to the smaller upright size, but adequate for the basics.

$400-700: Titan T-3 or Rep PR-4000

The best value tier. 2x3 inch uprights (Titan) or 3x3 inch (Rep), 11-gauge steel, Westside hole spacing, extensive attachment ecosystems. These racks serve most home gym powerlifters for a lifetime.

$700-1,200: Rogue RML-390F or Rep PR-5000

Premium construction, 3x3 inch 11-gauge steel, virtually unlimited attachment options. Built to commercial standards. You'll never outgrow these racks.

$1,200+: Rogue Monster or Sorinex

Commercial and competition-grade equipment. 3x3 inch uprights, heavy-gauge steel, designed for decades of daily use in a commercial setting. Unnecessary for most home gyms but objectively the best-built racks available.

ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION

Most racks ship flat-packed and require assembly. Budget 2-4 hours and a second person for assembly. You'll need a socket wrench set, a level, and patience.

Bolting down: if your rack is on a concrete floor, bolt it down. Anchor bolts into concrete provide stability that the rack's weight alone cannot. For garage gyms with concrete slabs, this is straightforward — drill holes, insert anchors, bolt the rack down.

If you can't bolt down (rental, wood floor, etc.), load the base with weight plates to increase stability. Some racks have rear plate storage that serves double duty as ballast.

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

A rack is a decades-long purchase. The $200 you save buying the cheapest option might cost you in limited attachment options, reduced stability, or a rack you outgrow in two years and replace anyway.

Buy the best rack your budget allows, prioritize Westside hole spacing and adequate steel, and verify that the attachments you'll want later are compatible with the rack you're buying now. That approach avoids regret.

Your rack is the skeleton of your gym. Everything else hangs on it.
